RACHEL YOUN

Rachel Youn (b. 1994, Abington, PA) is an artist living and working in New Haven, CT. Working across sculpture and installation, Youn sources materials with a history of aspiration and failure through online secondhand shopping. Youn rescues electric massagers from suburban limbo, fastening artificial plants to the machines to create kinetic sculptures that are clumsy, erotic, and absurd. Haunted by their immigrant father’s pursuit of the American Dream, their work identifies with the replica that earnestly desires to be real and the failed object that simulates care and intimacy.

STATE STREET & BISHOP STREET

The Reveler series, comprising Reveler I and Reveler II, is a work of kinetic sculptures where the pairs of fake leaves are the subject matter, competing for attention from the viewer and intertwining with each other in odd positions upon their movement. These leaves come alive, being tied to two rotating disks in the piece’s foundation, a foot massager. Meant to obnoxiously interact with each other and pose a humorous take on what a sculpture can be, the Reveler series thrives the more it gets audiences’ reactions — hence being placed in this corner facing window.
